The long awaited film adapted from Paula Hawkins best selling novel The Girl on the Train was released in Australia last week.

The film follows Rachel, played by Emily Blunt, through a complicated maze of different narrators, flashbacks and various points of views. Rachel rides the train everyday past the house where she used to live with her husband, who now lives there with his new wife and child. She starts to watch a couple who lives a few houses down (Megan and Scott), making up a happy story for them. When Megan goes missing and Rachel is covered in bruises with no memory of the night before, she becomes very invested in the case.

I am a fan of Emily Blunt, and she did as best she could with this weeping and plaintive role. I was significantly underwhelmed by the overall production of the film. Additionally, the move to change the setting to New York rather than the original London takes away part of its character.

I would recommend sticking to the book in future.

2.5/5
