Prometheus (2012)

And our next review: Alien 5 … I mean, Prometheus.

Directed by Ridley Scott and developed from the early 2000’s for over a decade comes a 2012 Sci-Fi movie that is the exact cinematic definition of overrated. Prometheus fell into the trap of so many movies before and since: Scott provides an abundance of evidence in film proving that you can allocate a significant portion of a $120-$130 Million budget to Visual Effects, you can cast actors in the calibre of Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba and Guy Pearce. You can bring in $403 million worldwide at the box office and can ride on the back of your own Sci-Fi Horror classic of 1979 and just about carbon copy every fibre of the movie’s universe. And somehow (as per usual), poor writing and a nonsensical plot completely overshadow the movie.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the Alien (and Predator for that matter) Storylines and movies as much as the next Sci-Fi fan, and with IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes scores of 7/10 and 73% respectively, my humble opinion could be up for debate. But (Spoiler Alert!), when an Alien/Humanoid civilisation is linked to the creation and potential destruction of Earth and the Human Race, and by using a biological entity (“weapon”) to mutate and evolve humans into another form (I’ll try to leave it vague) … Scott and the Co-Writers of Prometheus have created the perfect storm between ridiculous clichés and lazy writing/plot development.

In short, Visually I enjoyed the movie. And to be fair some of the scenes and acting performances were great (Fassbender largely) …
But in all seriousness, they should have just remade Alien Vs. Predator.

Score: 2/5
